Newark/Long Valley Project

Newark/Long Valley
Cooperative Weed Management
Area Leafy Spurge Project

The Newark/Long Valley CWMA
re-treated approximately 250 acres of
Leafy Spurge in north end of their
boundary near the Elko and White Pine
county line.  Because of the rugged
terrain the treatment was a cooperative
effort between members of the CWMA
Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition,
Tri-County Weed Control, Nevada
Forest Service and the Back Country
Horse Association. ATV's and a Spray
Truck were used when possible but a
majority of the treatment was done with
Backpack and Horse Mounted
Sprayers.   Sprayers that assisted with
the treatments last year were able to
see a significant reduction in the
amount of Leafy Spurge present this
year compared to last year.  The
horses were used to transport water up
the mountain so sprayers were able to
refill packs at both the top and bottom
of the mountain.  In a team effort, crews
tackled the mountain and were able to
cover a larger area this year.  The
ability to cover more acreage was do to
the reduction of the targeted species in
last years treatment area. Continued
treatments will be required for long term
control of Leafy Spurge in the area.
